Christmas on the Square returns to Mount Pleasant for its 11th year, full of established favorites and new surprises. Make plans to be downtown for all the festivities Friday, November 30th through Sunday, December 2nd.

The weekend events will once again include the artificial ice-skating rink on the east side of the Titus County Courthouse brought to you by Symmetry Turf. “Community Involvement is very important to us, so we’re excited to be sponsoring the skating rink at Christmas on the Square this year. So many people enjoy downtown with their families to celebrate the season and have a safe, fun time.  We’re looking forward to the entire weekend” says Jason Bell, owner, Symmetry Turf.

Jacob Hatfield, Director of Community Services is thrilled about the crowds it brings downtown. “We are excited to bring the rink back again this year! Last year we had over 850 people skate in the 25 hours the rink was open.”

The rink will be open Friday 4:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. and Sunday 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Sessions will last 30 minutes and the cost of $5.00 per person includes skates.

“Be sure to check out our Facebook page for an opportunity for FREE tickets,” said Hatfield.

Tickets can be purchased during scheduled rink times; there will be no pre-sales.

Friday night kicks off with the skating rink, a visit from Santa, Christmas Tree Lighting from Cypress Basin Hospice and of course shopping.

“We are excited to welcome people downtown in our shops and businesses. This is just another opportunity to highlight what we merchants in downtown Mount Pleasant have to offer. Christmas on the Square has become a tradition that families enjoy and we are glad to be part of that,” said Main Street President D’Ann Colley.

Santa will once again be downtown making his list and giving children the chance to tell him what they want for Christmas. The Mount Pleasant/Titus County Chamber of Commerce will have Santa on the Square Friday night from 6 pm – 8 pm, and again Saturday before and after the parade from 4:00 p.m. to 6 p.m. and again from 7:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.

The O. B. Goolsby Memorial Chili Cook-off held each year at Christmas on the Square will fill downtown with the mouthwatering aroma of local contenders’ finest chili recipes.

“Those looking for some of the best chili in Mount Pleasant know they can find it on the square that day,” added Hatfield when asked about the cook-off. “This has been a successful event and the Goolsby family works hard to make it that way.”

Prize money will be given to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place entries with additional prizes for best campsite. Chili will be served to the public beginning at 4:00 p.m. and served throughout the evening. Melissa Goolsby Copeland and Tennille Goolsby, Cook-off Chairs and daughters of the late Mr. Goolsby said “We are overwhelmed with the support of this community event at Christmas on the Square. It gets larger every year. We have been able to raise thousands of dollars for Hope Ministries of Northeast Texas and families in our community.”

The City of Mount Pleasant Rotary Christmas Parade “The Sounds of Christmas” starts at 6 pm Saturday and will make its way through Mount Pleasant from the Civic Center, traveling and around the square. “This parade has grown to become one of the biggest in Christmas parades in Northeast Texas and Mount Pleasant is the perfect city to host it,” Amy Hinton, Rotary Parade Chairman, said. Entries are still being accepted so there is still time to l sign up to enter a vehicle or float in the parade. Prizes are given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place floats and vehicles.

The Downtown Christmas Open House will officially be held on Sunday, December 2nd from 1 pm – 5 pm but the Christmas experiences will be happening all weekend inside the charming and vibrant locally owned shops.  Come downtown Sunday afternoon and discover gourmet treats, trendy clothing, hand-made jewelry, fine art, eclectic home furnishings, and something for everyone on your list.

This year will be the second year the downtown merchants are offering a gift basket with prizes and gift cards totaling at least $1,000. Pick up a punch card at any participating merchant, visit all the stores listed and get your card punched. Enter that card into the drawing that will be held at 5 pm at the end of the open house event. One lucky person will be in for a very merry Christmas.
