Officials from the City of Heath, Texas in Rockwall and Kaufman counties are warning area residents of the painful side effects of touching a Puss Moth Caterpillar.
These insects have been spotted not far from home, however, they are prevalent throughout Texas.
While the caterpillar may look soft, warm and fuzzy it couldn’t be farther from the opposite. The Puss Moth Caterpillar is the most venomous caterpillar in the United States according to National Geographic.
Underneath the soft outer appearance hides small, extremely toxic spines that stick in human skin when touched. Reports by those who have fallen victim say that the sting is similar to that of a bee, only worse.
Reports indicate that pain rapidly increases and can even make your bones hurt.
It’s important to educate your children that these insects are not ones to be played with or touched. An encounter with a Puss Moth Caterpillar may get you a ticket to the emergency room.
